Australia's mining industry is advancing its efforts to reduce emissions with significant trials of hydrogen and electric trucks now underway. Fortescue Metals Group LTD, Cloud Break is currently trialing a hydrogen fuel cell electric truck prototype at its Christmas Creek mine in the Pilbara. This truck, equipped with a 1.6-megawatt-hour battery and 500 kilowatts of fuel cells, can store over 380 kilograms of liquid hydrogen and is being refueled from a hydrogen plant at Fortescue's Green Energy Hub.
At the same time, Clayton Franklin, founder of EPCA - Electric Power Conversions Australia, showcased his electric conversion of a 160-tonne Caterpillar 777 haul truck at the Diggers & Dealers Mining Forum. This truck, now electric, costs significantly less to operate compared to its diesel counterpart, underscoring the potential for cost savings and environmental benefits. These innovations are a significant step forward in making Australia's mining sector cleaner and more sustainable.
