Algeria has introduced a national hydrogen strategy with the goal of providing Europe with 10% of its clean hydrogen requirements by 2040. Possessing the world's tenth-largest proven natural gas reserves, Algeria aims to produce both blue hydrogen (from fossil gas with carbon capture and storage) and green hydrogen (from solar and wind energy). The country's roadmap is structured in three phases: start-up (2023-30) with pilot projects; expansion and market creation (2030-40); and industrialization and market competitiveness (2040-50). Key objectives include accelerating Algeria's energy transition, reducing domestic fossil gas consumption, fostering a clean hydrogen ecosystem, and establishing research and development centers. The strategy also emphasizes the need for foreign financing, international partnerships, and infrastructure improvements, including strengthening the local electricity grid.
